Vitelco shuts down one of its tanneries

Recently, renowned leather company Vitelco decided to close its tannery located in Lichtenvoorde, the Netherlands.
It is understood that the tannery has been in operation for several decades. On May 2nd, employees were notified of the closure plan, with the tannery scheduled to shut down within this year. The exact closure date is still under discussion by the company’s management. Many tannery employees expressed shock at the news. The company’s leader, Twan de Bie, stated: “This is a sad decision. We have many colleagues who have worked here for decades, and they have developed a deep emotional connection with the tannery.”
Twan de Bie also mentioned that due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations, continuing operations at the tannery would require significant financial support. However, the current business situation makes it difficult to sustain operations. We also considered relocating, but building a new factory elsewhere would face the same challenges. Ultimately, we have decided to close the tannery.
