New Power Facilities Activated at Major Leather Manufacturing Plant

Recently, renowned leather manufacturer Scottish Leather Group (SLG) commissioned a new large-scale solar photovoltaic array, marking another strong demonstration of SLG’s commitment to sustainable and circular leather production.
The photovoltaic installation consists of 4,348 solar panels covering an area of 33,000 square meters, with a maximum output of 3.0 MW—enough to power approximately 750 households annually. The system provides dedicated, self-generated, zero-environmental-impact electricity to SLG subsidiaries such as Bridge of Weir and Muirhead, expected to meet 24% of these tanneries’ annual electricity demand.
Located on the south side of SLG’s thermal energy plant, the solar array represents the latest investment in the group’s more than 20-year sustainable development strategy, including multimillion-pound commitments to low-carbon manufacturing. In 2025, Bridge of Weir celebrates its 120th anniversary and Muirhead its 185th, highlighting SLG’s determination to combine traditional manufacturing craftsmanship with environmental innovation.
SLG is steadily advancing toward achieving net-zero emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) in its manufacturing processes by the end of 2025. SLG reports that its leather production has one of the lowest carbon intensities in the world, with an independently verified average carbon footprint as low as 8 kg CO? equivalent per square meter, without the use of any carbon offsetting.
Warren Bowden, Head of Innovation and Sustainability at SLG, stated: “The commissioning of the new solar array marks a key step forward in on-site clean energy self-production. By reducing reliance on the grid, we will accelerate our goal of achieving 100% zero greenhouse gas emissions across our operations.”
