Portugal’s Leather Industry Shows Clear Signs of Recovery
Portugal’s leather industry is showing clear signs of recovery. According to the Portuguese Association of Footwear, Components, Leather Goods and Their Substitutes (APICCAPS), driven by growing demand in Europe’s core markets, Portugal’s leather exports increased by 5.8% year on year in 2025.
As of September 2025, the sector’s leather exports reached €81 million. Spain remained the largest export destination. Although exports to Spain declined by 4.6%, the total value still stood at €17 million. Exports to Italy grew by 8.7% to €13 million, while exports to France performed particularly strongly, surging 31.2% to €11 million.
The association noted that this performance not only reflects a recovery in overseas demand, but also highlights the continued efforts of Portuguese tanneries to modernize production and align with global requirements for quality, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
The export growth indicates that, after a challenging period marked by international market volatility and rising costs, Portuguese leather companies are gradually regaining competitiveness. Maintaining high quality standards, complying with European regulations, and responding quickly to increasingly demanding customer requirements have been key factors behind this improvement.
The association emphasized that the benefits of export growth extend beyond the tanning sector itself. It also helps ensure a stable supply of raw materials for domestic manufacturers, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the entire footwear and leather industry value chain.
At present, Portuguese tanneries are further expanding their international presence through major trade fairs. Although the fashion industry continues to face multiple challenges, these export results have injected new momentum into Portugal’s leather sector. The industry’s export growth, resilience, and growing international recognition have laid a solid foundation for future development.
