Pakistan's Leather Industry May Increase Raw Hide Imports Due to Declining Slaughter Rates

Recently, Hamid Arshad Zahur, Chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association, stated that due to inflation and weakened consumer purchasing power, the number of goats and sheep slaughtered during Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected to decline. As a result, Pakistan's leather industry may increase imports of raw hides and skins.
Pakistan's leather and leather products industry is valued at approximately USD 850–900 million and is one of the country's major export sectors, supplying leather, garments, gloves, and footwear to markets across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
According to Hamid Arshad Zahur, prices for goats and sheep in local livestock markets have risen to nearly PKR 60,000 (approximately RMB 1,460) per animal. As prices increase, more consumers are choosing to purchase cattle for sacrificial purposes rather than buying goats or sheep individually. A decline in the domestic supply of goat and sheep skins is therefore expected to drive higher import demand among local tanneries.
Hamid Arshad Zahur also noted that the average size of animal hides, including goat skins, has been shrinking in recent years. During previous Eid al-Adha seasons, hide sizes typically ranged from 30 to 32 square feet, whereas they have now declined to around 26 square feet.
According to estimates from the Pakistan Tanners Association, approximately 2.8 million cattle are expected to be slaughtered during Eid al-Adha 2026, representing a 12% increase from 2.5 million head in 2025. In contrast, goat and sheep slaughter is projected to decline by 4% to 4.8 million animals, including 4.3 million goats and 500,000 sheep.
Hamid Arshad Zahur stated that whenever domestic supplies of goat and sheep skins decrease, leather manufacturers turn to imports to meet demand. Currently, due to local supply shortages, Pakistan's leather industry imports raw hides and skins worth approximately USD 150 million (around RMB 1.02 billion) annually. Should supplies of goat and sheep skins continue to decline during Eid al-Adha 2026, import volumes may increase further.
Pakistan currently imports hides and skins primarily from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa. Its leather products are mainly exported to Vietnam, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.
