Major Tanning Companies Set to Expand Into This Market

Recently, the Scottish Leather Group (SLG), a leading player in the tanning industry, announced the acquisition of Aerotech Systems Limited, headquartered in Manchester, UK. The move aims to strengthen its strategic position in the aviation interiors market and enhance its integrated capabilities in certification, design, and manufacturing.

It is reported that SLG owns well-known leather brands including Muirhead, Bridge of Weir, and Lang. Among them, Muirhead has long been dedicated to supplying high-performance leather products for the global aviation industry and other mass transportation sectors.

Through this acquisition, SLG has integrated Aerotech’s UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Part 21G Production Organisation Approval into its business system. Combined with its existing strengths in design, engineering, and manufacturing, SLG will be able to develop a more efficient solution for aircraft cabin interiors.

According to documents from the UK Companies House, three SLG executives have been appointed as directors of Aerotech, while Aerotech founder Graham Whiteman has stepped down from his position.

The aviation industry has long faced strict certification requirements, tight delivery schedules, and complex supply chain challenges. SLG stated that by internalizing Aerotech’s CAA Part 21G certification, the group will be able to deliver fully certified aircraft interior components more efficiently, significantly shorten lead times, and simplify cooperation with airlines and OEMs.

Stephen Ritchie, Sales Director of Muirhead’s aviation division, noted that the acquisition represents a key milestone in the group’s development. It will enable SLG to directly certify and deliver compliant aircraft interior components, providing customers with greater assurance, flexibility, and faster delivery.

Currently, SLG’s aviation product portfolio includes Bio PRO, high-performance aviation leather interiors, and customized seat covers. All products are supported by its internal certification capabilities, enabling a fully integrated aircraft seating solution.

SLG emphasized that this integrated approach will help partners better respond to evolving regulatory requirements in the aviation sector, while improving overall cabin interior consistency and reducing operational complexity throughout project execution.
