Five Major Italian Tanneries Form New Leather Alliance

At the recent Lineapelle exhibition, five well-known Italian tanneries announced the formation of a new leather alliance—the ITAN Alliance. Their shared goal is to promote the exceptional quality of Italian leather through authenticity, innovation, and sustainability.
The news of this new alliance has attracted widespread attention across the industry. The alliance brings together some of the most respected tanneries from the Tuscany region, including La Scarpa, Montana, Naturaleather, Meridiana, and Arké.
While maintaining their individual craftsmanship and characteristics, ITAN members will integrate resources and technology to meet the dual market demands for innovation and efficiency.
Maurizio Cassini, head of La Scarpa, stated: “In an increasingly globalized competitive environment, we are committed to providing international brands with high-quality, traceable, and sustainable materials. The ITAN Alliance will serve as a solid, structured, and transparent partner. Each tannery will retain its unique craftsmanship while operating collaboratively, sharing expertise, equipment, and strategic insights.”
The professional specialization of the five tanneries forms a complete industry chain: La Scarpa, a pioneer in vegetable-tanned leather, focuses on biodegradable and compostable leather; Montana specializes in belt leather with distinctive finishing techniques; Naturaleather is the benchmark producer of vacchetta leather in Tuscany; Meridiana is deeply involved in printed leather for fashion furniture; and Arké combines tradition and technology, specializing in furniture and saddlery leather.
The ITAN Alliance is equipped with full-process production facilities, including tanning drums and finishing workshops, capable of processing over 2,000 hides per day. It also features professional R&D departments and a coordinated logistics network, providing international brands with a traceable production system.
The establishment of this alliance is both a strategic response to market challenges and a demonstration of the Tuscany leather region’s adaptability to market changes. Leveraging the triple advantage of traditional craftsmanship, innovative technology, and cluster synergy, the alliance aims to set a new benchmark for quality and sustainability in the global leather industry.
