Brazilian Cattle Slaughter Falls 6.8% Month-on-Month, Driving Higher Raw Hide and Wet-Blue Prices.

According to preliminary data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Brazil’s cattle slaughter volume in the first quarter of 2026 declined by 6.8% compared with the fourth quarter of 2025. As slaughter activity decreased, the supply of raw hides tightened, driving up raw hide prices.

Meanwhile, market attention has also focused on Brazil’s utilization of its beef export quota to China. At present, approximately 50% of the quota has been used, and the full quota is expected to be exhausted by June. If exports slow afterward while slaughter volumes remain lower, raw hide supply could tighten further.

However, reduced raw hide availability is only one factor affecting the leather market. In recent years, an increasing share of cattle hides has been diverted away from the traditional leather supply chain. Salted wet hides, for example, accounted for only 1% of Brazil’s total hide exports by piece in 2021, but this share has now exceeded 17%. From January to April 2026, cumulative exports reached 1.7 million hides, compared with only about 100,000 hides during the same period in 2021. Most of these salted wet hides are used for food consumption, with some products exported to countries such as Nigeria.

As a result, a significant volume of Brazilian raw hides is no longer processed into wet-blue leather or exported to overseas leather markets. Instead, these hides bypass the traditional leather supply chain and are therefore unavailable for the production of footwear, automotive interiors, furniture, and other leather products.

In addition, demand for raw hides from the gelatin and collagen peptide sectors has been increasing. The average export value in this segment has recovered to US$6.45 per hide, making it an increasingly attractive destination for raw hide resources.

Industry analysts therefore believe that, with declining cattle slaughter volumes, rising raw hide costs, and a growing proportion of hides being diverted to salted wet hide exports as well as non-leather applications such as gelatin and collagen peptides, the supply of raw hides available to the traditional leather industry will continue to shrink. Against this backdrop, wet-blue leather prices in Brazil are expected to remain under upward pressure in the short term.
