EU footwear exports to Australia enter zero-tariff regime.

The European Union and Australia concluded negotiations in March on a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), aimed at boosting trade flows and strengthening supply chain resilience.

According to the agreement, more than 99% of tariffs on EU exports to Australia will be eliminated. Footwear, apparel, and textiles are included in the immediate zero-tariff list. The deal is expected to save the EU approximately €1 billion in tariff costs annually and is projected to increase EU exports to Australia by 33% over the next decade. By 2030, the agreement could contribute around €4 billion to the EU’s GDP.

The agreement includes safeguard clauses designed to protect sensitive EU industries, such as beef, sugar, rice, and dairy products, by setting import quotas. It also establishes a mechanism allowing the EU to respond quickly in the event of import surges. In addition, it strengthens protection for EU geographical indications, covering hundreds of food and beverage products, spirits, and more than 1,600 wines.

The deal also improves EU access to critical resources such as lithium and aluminum, supporting industrial development and supply chain diversification.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the agreement would contribute approximately USD 7 billion annually to the Australian economy. He also noted that tariffs on Australian critical minerals exported to the EU will be almost entirely removed, helping stabilize global supply chains.

Meanwhile, both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in security and defense. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked that although the EU and Australia are geographically distant, they share closely aligned worldviews. She added that the new dynamic partnerships in security, defense, and trade would further strengthen their ties.

The draft text of the agreement is expected to be released soon. The agreement still requires approval from the European Council and the European Parliament, as well as ratification through Australia’s domestic legislative process, before it can officially take effect.
